THE LEGEND OF OHIA AND LEHUA
Ancient Hawaiian legend tells of the enchanting Lehua whose lover was called 'Ohi'a. One day the powerful Fire Goddess, Pele, saw 'Ohi'a and wanted him for herself- but 'Ohi'a's love for Lehua was great and unwavering. Pele heard 'Ohi'a's refusal and was filled with rage and jealousy so she turned him into a knarled tree. When Lehua saw what 'Ohi'a had become she wept and wept- and ached to be reunited with her love. Because the majestic Pele knew she had acted out of anger, and because the magic could not be reversed, and because it was Lehua's heart's desire to be with 'Ohi'a, Pele turned Lehua into the beautiful blossom that sits on the 'ohi'a lehua tree- and it is said that if you pick the lehua blossom it will rain... because to this day 'Ohi'a and Lehua want to be together. |
